And How To Improve Your English Writing

If you read my previous articles, you would notice that my English isn’t perfect. I’m pretty sure there are mistakes everywhere, grammatical or otherwise.

To be frank, English isn’t my first language. It is not even my second or third language. In fact, English is the fifth language I learned. Sure, I did respectably well in my English class back in secondary school, where the English lessons were conducted in Indonesian language. But nothing is nearly as good as first hand experience of communicating in English, which I had chance only when I further my study in Malaysia 10 years ago.

If you are like me, if English is your second or third language, or even if you are a native speaker with less than perfect command of English, I understand how hard it is to finish up an English article.

To help, I would like to present these suggestion to improve your English writing.

Five Tips To Improve Your English Blog Writing

1. Go For It !
   Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and just write down your thoughts in your blog. Unless your blog is about politics or education, your readers really aren’t interested in how good your writing is. Write useful and interesting contents with good informational value, and your blog readers probably wouldn’t even notice your English mistakes.
2. Read
   The key to good writing is to read a lot. Get some reading materials in English on different mediums, from blogs and magazines to books and newspaper, and also take on interest in good variety of topics. It will expand your knowledge while at the same time help improving your vocabulary and shaping your writing style.
3. Write
   Carefully craft your post, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph. Run the sentence in your mind when you are free. Anytime you think of a better sentence to express your idea, jot it down in a notebook. Use pictures to help drive down your point and include quotations from reliable sources like Wikipedia or some popular bloggers.
4. Proof-Read
   After you finish writing an article, don’t post it first. Preview the post, and read aloud the article you have just written, over and over. Is there any words not in right place, any typo / spelling mistake? Do the sentences flow naturally? If possible, also ask someone else to proof read and point out the mistakes to you.
5. Practice
   Practice makes perfect. This is true in writing as much as almost any imaginable skill. If you want any proof of this, just compare my first articles 3 years back with recent posts. What you need to do is keep on writing to hone your skill. You’ll get better with each posting, and before you notice you’d have perfected a good English writing in your blog.
