Top Social Bookmarking Service According to Alexa Ranking
I used the Social Bookmarks WordPress Plugin on this blog. It allows me to put a number of social bookmark buttons at the bottom of every post in this blog, making it easier for visitors to bookmark this site.
This Social Bookmarks is a very good plugin, with a choice of over 40 social networks. But that is where the problem comes. I don’t want to have a long list of 40 mini icons at the end of every post, that will be very confusing for you, the visitors.
Personally using only a few of the social bookmarking sites myself, I need to choose the social bookmark sites that my visitors will more likely use. While fully understanding Alexa’s shortcomings, I decide to use Alexa rankings anyway to determine the top social networking sites that I will display on my blog. In the end, it really doesn’t get far from the usual suspects.
Here is the list, the Top 10 Social Bookmarking Sites according to Alexa:

Trully a social networking site, Facebook has evolved much from its early days. With clean uncluttered layout, ease of use, powerful networking functions, and third party apps, Facebook undoubtedly has won the first round social network batttle, leaving its previous competitor MySpace and Friendster in dust.

By asking a simple question of “What are you doing?”, Twitter has amassed huge followings among the Internet users. Anytime of the day, you can update your Twitter status via Twitter website, web apps, and mobile phones. The 140 characters limit is probably makes it so successful.

Put it simply, you vote for a page, and if enough other people vote for it, the page will be featured in the frontpage of Digg. Being featured in the front page will send ten of thousands of visitors to your website, almost surely crippling your web hosting if you are not ready for this kind of traffic. This is called as “Digg effect”. Once a poster boy of Web 2.0, Digg has lost much of it’s early luster.

StumbleUpon is a lot like using your Ipod Shuffle. You Stumble, and the site will open up a webpage that you may like. You favorit the page if you like it, and StumbleUpon will choose the next recommendations based on the pages you have favourited. Stumble Upon is my personal favorite amongst this list.

In Squidoo, you can create overview pages called lenses, that gather everything you know about your topic of interest, and share it to the community. Users can choose to keep the earning from their lenses or donate it to a charity of their choice.

Reddit works almost the same as as Digg. The difference is probably in the crowd. I find that it’s easier to get interested visitors from reddit than Digg. To sum it up, in Digg, your popularity matters most, while in reddit quality submission get its place.

If bookmarking is more important than networking, delicious will be your best choice. Simple interface that lets you bookmark web pages and access it everywhere from the web. Only if you want to, you can share it with others too.

Technorati is basically a link popularity contest where most-linked blog posts get featured. It works much like Google Pagerank, blog version. Each blog is assigned an authority number, you get additional authority for each blog post that get linked by others. Technorati was once the front runner of service for bloggers, but it is really losing much of the influence now.

Note: Google Bookmarks and Yahoo Buzz are two special case. Google’s Alexa ranking 1 compasses everything on google.com, including Google Search, Google Map, Google Adsense and Google Analytics. Similarly with Yahoo Buzz, Alexa rank 2 is for everything on Yahoo.com. I have no idea on how popular Google Bookmarks and Yahoo Buzz, but I guess they should be among the top 10. The reason I’m not including Google and Yahoo in the Top 10 list is because social bookmarking is not the main reason of their existence.

I have used and very satisfied to the yahoo buzz. I have seen many of my bookmarks still live in the internet unlike propeller that they do delete the bookmark in short time.

I think facebook is good only if you have quantity of followers. Problems with this follower is just they are very selective.
I think that goes in circle. The first hundred followers is the hardest. Once you get that number of followers, others will follow. You just need to ensure to build more quality content.
