John Chow Site Traffic & Visitors

Malaysian Blogger Series: Getting to know John Chow visitors & traffic
by Fernando Hal (cheatad.com)

John Chow (johnchow.com) is among the rare few Malaysian bloggers who are known more in the rest of the world than in Malaysia. He was most famous for announcing his income in the earning report, month after month.

In June 2008, John Chow earns about $40000 from his blog. (For convenience sake, let me convert that for you. That’s about $60k in Singapore Dollar, 150k in Malaysian Ringgit, or 400 millions in Indonesian Rupiah).

Nowadays, John seldom post the earning report anymore, but I’ve been wondering for a long time. How much actually is John Chow’s visitor traffic to earn such figure?

In this blog post, John writes about how much traffic he get from Google since he was unbanned from the search engine somewhere in July.

I’m not particularly interested with his rambling about Google, but the Analytics stat that he attached show some interesting information.

JohnChow.com Google Analytics data from July 1st to July 23rd 2009
Traffic source:Search Engine
Google sent 8383 non-paid traffic visit via 4386 keywords
Visits : 8383 (4.65% of Site Total)
Pages/Visit: 2.02 (Site Avg 1.37)
Avg Time on Site: 00:02:23 (00:01:16)
% New Visits : 73.70% (site Avg:30.89)
Bounce Rate: 65.82% (Site Avg: 85.64%)

Breaking down this figure a little, we can find out that JohnChow.com has:
Total site visits in the 23 days = 8383 x (100/4.65) = 180279 visitors
Average visitors /day = 180279 visitors / 23 days = 7838 visitors / day
Monthly visitor = 7838 x 30 days = 253147 visitors / month
Average pageview = 7838 x 1.37 = 10738 pageviews / day
Monthly pageview = 10738 x 30 days = 322141 pageviews / month

Granted, with Google unbanning him recently, his traffic will surely grow further. However, it does provide some inspiration for me, in the sense that I can actually foresee that with this amount of traffic, I can probably earn about the same.

My earning is currently still pale in comparison from John Chow’s, particularly due to my dependence on Google Adsense so far. In term of traffic, however, I have actually got a site with slightly more visitors and much more pageviews than JohnChow.com. I hope I can find more ways to monetize it sooner.

How about you? Does this post help you in anyway? Let me know in the comment below.

Nice little insight. Looks like he is making about 15 cents per 1,000 visitors.

    Good one, Rob…
    That’s more like 15 cents per visitor, or $150 per 1000 visitor…
    And $124 eCPM….

    Holy s***!
