What are clickbots?

A click bot is basically a piece of software written to simulate human clicks. Bot (or robot) here refers to the software that perform pre-programmed tasks automatically. There are good bots, designed with good intention, and bad bots. The most popular type of bot is the well-known Internet crawler Bot.

Other popular application of bots are the Microsoft Office Macro, or Apple Mac Automator. (Article here describe how to create a bot on Mac, but it might not be really appropriate to call it a clickbot due to the fact that clicking isn’t the main function/goal).

Internet bots, also known as web robots, WWW robots or simply bots, are software applications that run automated tasks over the Internet. Typically, bots perform tasks that are both simple and structurally repetitive, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone. The largest use of bots is in web spidering, in which an automated script fetches, analyses and files information from web servers at many times the speed of a human. Each server can have a file called robots.txt, containing rules for the spidering of that server that the bot is supposed to obey.

Click bots are quite close to the description above. They perform simple, repetitive task, at a much higher rate than would be possible by human. Their main function is to perform/simulate human clicks on the computer. Even web crawler/spider itself is a type of clickbot.

Something else to take note: as long as they are pre-programmed to do so, bots can perform the tasks without any human intervention. From commercial view, this can translate into huge savings of time and human resources.

There are many types of clickbots with each of them designed to perform specific type of clicks, mostly with malicious intention. Here are some of them.

Types of clickbots

1. Adsense clickbot (or any other advertisement clickbot)

Adsense clickbot is an automated adsense clicker software, written to perform fraudulent clicks on Google Adsense advertisements. The intention is for web-publishers to earn more money through Google Adsense by cheating. These click-frauds will eventually be detected, but it seems that many dishonest publishers are not deterred. Some also try to sabotage their competitor by creating fake-clicks to their competitor’s Adsense.

In 2006, click-fraud clickbots gained notoriety by the relative success of Clickbot.A by penetrating over 100000 personal computers, and use them to perform click-frauds.

2. Game clickbot

Game cheat is the most sought-after function of clickbots. Game click bots are designed to simulate human clicks in game-playing. This is mostly used in MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) online games due to the fact that each game player want to advance faster in their game character level (power, game money/gold, or additional attributes) than other players’, while not everyone have the time or motivation to be constantly involved in the game. Game clickbots help game players (unfairly) to cheat the system by simulate game-playing without any actual person performing the moves. There are also commercial interests involved, where some companies are are founded on the business model of building advanced characters in popular games and sell it to other players.

3. Internet crawler

While they don’t really “click”, their goal is to follow hyperlinks in the Internet, from one webpage to another, anylysing the information and file them. It is the action of following the hyperlink that makes them to be called as clickbot, as they are basically performing the same function as human clicking on the hyperlink.

Internet clickbots do not necessarily belong to large search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing. You can even download some clickbots to perform the tasks. Many times it is for website owners to review their own website structure, or for casual web users to make an offline copy of their favorit website.
