WordPress the Software vs WordPress the Service

As I have written just before, I love WordPress. I recommend it to everyone, newbie and experienced webmasters alike.

But for those of you who are new to the web publishing world, you might get confused, why did I say wordpress is a blogging software, while you only know it as a blog provider.

The difference is subtle, but has major impact. WordPress.org is the software provider. While WordPress.com is the service provider.

At wordpress.org, you can download the software/script free of charge. You can then install it to any of your website. And yes, that means you need to get a domain name (e.g. cheatad.com or gniuz.com or sgholiday.com ), and a decent hosting provider. (Don’t worry if you don’t understand about domain name and hosting provider, I’ll get back to this in this few days)

WordPress.com allows you to create a blog at wordpress.com, basically based on the same WordPress software. Your website address (URL) will then be myname.wordpress.com. This way, you don’t need to buy anything, don’t need to install anything. But it does have serious drawbacks. If you are serious about making money online, forget this option.

Among the drawbacks of wordpress.com are:

  • The flexibility of the wordpress software is severely limited
  • You can only use a subset of WordPress software powerful functions
  • Your website availability depends on the continuity of wordpress.com
  • If you want to make money, “myname.wordpress.com” doesn’t look professional
